Our year started at the stroke of midnight when our son Evan tied the knot with Ashlee, so within the first few minutes of 1/1/11, we gained a daughter in law! Now we also had to get ready for our daughter to start back to college, deal with changes in the weather, take care of the ever growing honey-do list and those dreaded New Years Resolutions! Which got me to thinking, what New Year Resolutions do you have in regards to using your amateur radio license? Are you going to upgrade your license? Are you going to participate in a net? Are you going to help with any events? Are you going to attend some of our classes? Are you going to attend any hamfests? I am asking that each one of you try to donate your time and talents. Try to give at least one hour of your time and share your hobby with others. Run a Net. Help with a VE testing session. Bring treats to a meeting. Co-Chair an event. Help the Red Cross. Become Skywarn Trained. In short, Participate !!! Many of our members put in many hours behind the scenes so that our meetings run smoothly, your tummies are tickled with treats, the room is set up and torn down. Also, calendars must be filled in, contact lists need to be distributed, presenters lined up, classes taught, directories made, websites run, newsletters written. Then there are the weekly nets and community events that need our participation. The lists can go on and on, but how do you fit in? We need your help, your knowledge, and your time. Please make it a New Years Resolution to become more involved! January 13th: Joseph Bell from Kent co. will refresh us on our NTS Training (National Traffic System). This is something that we should be familiar with. This training will be put in to your Training Record if you an OCEC member. February 10th: Joe Kannucan will provide a class on Utility Line Identification. This class will refresh our awareness and understanding of issues we face during storm spotting or any time you may encounter downed power or other utility lines. Both of these classes will be held in the EOC training room, which is in the lower level of the Fillmore St. Complex at12220 Filmore Street in West Olive, Michigan. These classes are available to all local hams. If you have any questions please email me at ocecdec@gmail.com Thanks, Jason MacKay Deputy Emergency Coordinator Ottawa County Emergency Communications Support Your Club By now you may have attended our club meeting at our new location, and found that we offer informative and interesting guest speakers, as well as delicious snacks and your fill of coffee. Last year we welcomed our largest number of participants to Field Day. Our club is recognized as an ARRL Special Service Club for its continuing efforts that offer education opportunities and communications services to serve our community! At almost any time of day you may hear conversations on our 147.060 Repeater, and its wide coverage area allows it to play a vital role in Skywarn Nets. Your contribution of $20 a year (effectively $1.67 a month) helps us to keep the repeater working, the coffee perking, and the presentations provided. It also pay corporation fees, liability insurance, Field Day food, and other operating expenses.
